چکیده

A technique for the assimilation of Special Sensor Microwave Imager (SSM/I) data in the National Centers for Environmental Prediction’s (NCEP’s) global data assimilation and forecast system is described. Because the radiative transfer (RT) model used here does not yet allow for cloud/rain effects, it is crucial to properly identify and exclude (or correct) cloud/rain-contaminated radiances using quality control (QC) and bias correction procedures. Both procedures require an accurate estimate of the total column cloud liquid water (CLW). The CLW is used in a frequency dependent cloud detection component of the QC and as a predictor in the bias correction algorithm. A two-month data assimilation experiment from July to August 2004 using the Gridpoint Statistical Interpolation (GSI) analysis system and the NCEP operational forecast model reveals that SSM/I radiance assimilation has significant positive impact on the analyses and forecasts. It adds moisture in the NH and tropics, and slightly reduces the moisture in the midto high-latitudes of the SH. Although the moisture added appears to be slightly excessive in the tropics, it reduces model spin-up of precipitation and substantially improves the dynamic fields. In addition, it improves forecast skill globally, especially in measures of the 200hPa vector wind error in the tropics. In terms of hurricane track, the SSM/I radiance assimilation produces more cases with smaller errors and reduces the average error. No disruption of the Hadley circulation is found by introducing the SSM/I radiance data.

Implementation of 1D+4D-Var Assimilation of Precipitation Affected Microwave Radiances at ECMWF, Part I: 1D-Var

This paper presents the operational implementation of a 1D+4D-Var assimilation system of rain affected satellite observations at ECMWF. The first part describes the methodology and performance analysis of the 1D-Var retrieval scheme in clouds and precipitation that uses SSM/I microwave radiance observations for the estimation of total column water vapor. The second part shows the global and lon...

Operational use of ATOVS radiances in global data assimilation at JMA

1. Introduction The Advanced TIROS Operational Vertical Sounder (ATOVS) radiances have been operationally assimilated in the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) global 3D-Var data assimilation system since 28 May 2003. It replaced TOVS/ATOVS retrievals, which had been assimilated in the JMA global data assimilation system. The direct assimilation of ATOVS radiances is superior to its retrieval as...

NCEP NOTES Assimilation of Tropical Cyclone Advisory Minimum Sea Level Pressure in the NCEP Global Data Assimilation System

The assimilation of official advisory minimum sea level pressure observations has been developed and tested in the National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP) Global Data Assimilation System (GDAS) to address forecaster concerns regarding some tropical systems being far too weak in operational Global Forecast System (GFS) analyses. The assimilation of these observations has been operat...

Impact of combined AIRS and GPS-RO data in the new version of the Canadian global forecast model

Environment Canada is currently planning to raise the lid of its operational global forecast model GEM (Global Environmental Multiscale) from 10 hPa (~30 km) to 0.1 hPa (~60 km) in the first quarter of 2009. The new version is called GEM-Strato. This project has several major components: changes to the model physics, new vertical coordinate, new background error statistics, and additional data ...

Improving Regional Forecast by Assimilating Atmospheric InfraRed Sounder (AIRS) Profiles into WRF model

The use of state-of-the-art hyperspectral sensors--such as the Atmospheric InfraRed Sounder (AIRS) on NASA’s polar-orbiting Aqua satellite--to retrieve high vertical resolution thermodynamic profiles and their subsequent assimilation into forecast models holds promise in improving weather predictions. This improved vertical resolution over previous capabilities results from the use of thousands...
